Celebrate Francophonie

PARKVIEW - Join French cultural network Alliance Francaise in celebrating the diversity of French culture at the Francophonie 2014 Festival.

The programme of events includes film screenings, live music and conferences.

For 35 years, Dominique Wolton has researched numerous areas that illuminate the future, and has often pleaded against current conventional wisdom.

Learn more about Wolton’s insight and intuition at conferences on 19 March at Lycee Jules Verne, Morningside, and on 20 March at Alliance Francaise, 17 Lower Park Drive, Parkview.

Enjoy Franco Na Biso’s tribute to Congolese musical giant Franco Luambo on 21 March at the Yeoville Recreation Centre, 26 Raleigh Street, Yeoville, at 4pm.

On 22 March, multitalented artist Sibongile Mbambo will take to the stage at Alliance Francaise, Parkview, at 7pm.

This gifted South African artist will deliver an emotional performance of her compositions in isiXhosa.

Join storytelling duo Caroline Bustos and Thando for Izindaba, and be transported into the world of South African folktales, be they of English, French, Xhosa or Zulu origin.

Izindaba will take place on 21 March at the Yeoville Recreation Centre at 2.30pm, and on 22 March at Alliance Francaise, Parkview, at 5.30pm.

On 28 March, enjoy the cine-concert 3 Tambours et 1 Lion at Alliance Francaise, Parkview, at 7pm.

The film will take the audience to the Niger River in 1951, where a group of Songhay fishermen, the Sorko, are preparing for a hippopotamus hunt, and were filmed by director and ethnologist Jean Rouch.

The concert will also feature music by Labelle, who brings together Reunion Island’s Maloya music and the techno resistance movement of Detroit, USA.

Audience members are encouraged to bring a picnic supper.
