Goethe-Institut March highlights

Film and art enthusiasts can look forward to an exciting month as the Goethe-Institut has some interesting events lined up this March.

The institute will host various exhibitions and shows, starting with an exhibition entitled Red by Simon Gush. This exhibition will focus on the political and social context behind the red Mercedes Benz given to Nelson Mandela by workers in East London in 1992 and will run from 27 March to 16 May.

Another exhibition to continue its run is Muntu Vilakazi’s photographic narrative focusing on the rise of the black middle class in South Africa. The Politics of Bling: An Eastrand culture quest is on at Goethe on Main in the Maboneng Precinct until 16 March.

On the cinematography side, young filmmakers can look forward to a workshop which will be hosted at Wits University by Antjie Ehmann and Harun Farocki. The workshop is titled an Attitude to Work and will run during the course of the month.

The Bioscope will also be screening Oberhausen on Tour, a short film about the International short film festival Obehausen, for the third year running. The screening will take place from 13 to 15 March.

Other events presented include:

Until 18 March: Music and installation interdisciplinary collaboration – with Clare Loveday and Nandipha Mntambo; Exhibition – Rise and Fall of Apartheid at Museum Africa.

25 March: Film – KiezKino at the Bioscope

26 March: Theatre – Donkey child

29 March: Language and performance art – In too deep (spoken word session).
