The session will introduce patrons to the brewing genius of the Devil’s Peak Brewing Company, and will provide information on food and beer pairings.
“Some [craft beers] have come and gone, and some have had better staying power,” said cafe owner Christine Patricios.
“We are grateful to the guys who brought craft beer into the South African mainstream, Rui Esteves and Brad Armitage… What they did for us all was bring to the fore the charm of uncharted territories when it comes to beer consumption, opening wide the floodgates of microbreweries all over south Africa.”
There now exists a large, enthusiastic community of budding microbrewers across the country, and craft beer festivals have sprung up like mushrooms after rain.
“Beer culture has never been this curated, as we have seen in many beer festivals recently. It’s marvellous,” she said.
Devil’s Peak Brewing Company began in response to this growing beer culture.
The Cape Town-based company set out to defy beer culture trends, and charter new developments in brewing.
“The idea is to create an experience like no other, to expand the mind through educating the palate,” said Patricios.
The people behind the company, the laid-back Capetonians that they are, abide by their own ten craft beer commandments:
- Beer should not be drunk from the bottle
- Pale lager is not the only style of beer
- Sniff before sip
- Honour thy hops
- The recipe is king
- Do not covet thy neighbour’s draught – share
- Appreciation is in the eye of the beholder
- No two beer styles are alike
- Worship is reserved for rare styles
- Resist the ordinary.
