Nothing for Mahala comes to SABC

JOBURG - If you haven’t seen the much-talked-about South African movie, Nothing for Mahala, then you’re in luck: the film is making its way to a small screen near you.

The movie, billed as one of 2013’s best South African films by movie critic Barry Ronge, Nothing for Mahala will premiere on SABC 1 on 2 March at 8pm. Written by Darrel Bristow-Bovey and directed by Rolie Nikiwe, it looks at issues of money and values in a changing society.

The all-South African cast features Thapelo Mokoena and Mmabatho Montsho, among others, and was produced by Dunkeld-based multimedia NGO, Heartlines. The movie is at the centre of the NGO’s Values and Money campaign, which encourages South Africans to reflect on how to earn, spend, save, borrow and give away their money.

Heartlines CEO Garth Japhet said there was no better time to look at the issues raised by the movie.

“Statistics show that South Africans are drowning in debt largely in order to survive, but also to impress others or show material progress in their lives,” he said.

Founded in 2002, the NGO uses media campaigns to spark conversations with the ultimate aim of changing entrenched behaviour. With the SABC1 screening, the NGO aims open up the discussion and encourage the nation to reflect on the values that inform money choices.

Head of SABC Education Danie Swart said, “Morals and values are the human code we live by in a civil and just society. As South Africans we naturally identify with values such as respect, responsibility, compassion and accountability. Nothing for Mahala is heart warming and encourages specific values around money issues.”
