One step closer to Wonderland

BRAAMFONTEIN - Lovers of the wonderful, weird and wacky can look forward to joining Alice's adventures in Wonderland next month.

Don’t be late for the very important date of 3 March, when Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr opens at the People’s Theatre at the Joburg Theatre complex.

Director Keith Smith said that the play was based on Lewis Carroll’s classic tale of a little girl who enters a magical land of adventure and intrigue.

“In addition to the ever-buoyant White Rabbit who travels through the audience to meet the Queen and King of Hearts, the audience will meet Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, the Duchess, the enchanting Alice, and [will] join the Mad Hatter for a tea party that will make young and old members of the audience feel as though they fell down the rabbit hole and were carried away by the fantasy of it all,” he said.

“This exciting Disney production has new arrangements, a new and vibrant cast, fabulous characters, popular songs, and we are thrilled to be able to bring this classic to life.”

The cast includes Minette Bouma as the “uppity and cruel” Duchess and the Cheshire Cat, Siphosethu Sihlangu as Tweedle Dee, the Gryphon and the March Hare, and radio presenter Sinakho Zokufa as the Caterpillar and the Queen of Hearts.

Nastassja Jooste will play the White Rabbit, and Emkay Khanyile will take on the roles of Tweedle Dum, the Mad Hatter, the Mock Turtle and the King of Hearts.

“The actors are passionate about creating a love of theatre from a very young age, thereby encouraging a life-time of theatre-going,” said Smith.

Jooste said she auditioned for the production because she loves entertaining and interacting with children.

The cast will be joined on stage by several children, including Morgan Beesley, Naomi Willis, Teagan McGinley, Kezia du Plessis, Zethu Kalipa, Thandolwami Buhle, Rebecca De Broglio and Kaelin Wills.

“Join the cast and their characters for this fast-paced stage adaptation full of interaction [and] with brand new musical arrangements of classic Disney songs [like] I’m Late, The Un-Birthday Song, and Zip-a-dee-doo-dah,” said co-director Jill Girard.

“Make sure there is plenty of sunshine heading your way these school holidays, and join the strong cast of this colourful musical in the joy, fun and fantasy of true children’s theatre.”

Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr will run from 3 March until 21 April at the People’s Theatre, Joburg Theatre, corner of Loveday and Hoofd streets, Braamfontein.
