Film society to screen royal drama

JOBURG - The Majestic Film Society will screen an award-winning drama set in the English royal court this month.

The Lion in Winter stars Peter O’Toole, Anthony Hopkins and Katharine Hepburn in dazzling Oscar winning form.

Set in the 12th Century, the 1968 film portrays King Henry II’s obsession to find a successor after the death of his heir.

One Christmas, the king summons his three remaining sons, along with his queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine, whom he had kept imprisoned for a decade.

“The relationship between the king and queen is fiery, and their passions turn from tenderness to fury as they scheme with and cajole their sons to determine who should be the future King of England,” said the society’s Selwyn Klass.

Hepburn won the Academy Award for best actress for her performance as Eleanor of Aquitaine.

The Lion in Winter will be screened on 23 February at the Ditsong Museum of Military History, Erlswold Way, Saxonwold, at 6pm.

The screening will be followed by a light supper with wine.
