Ndebele art comes to ConHill

BRAAMFONTEIN - Joburg's first Ndebele art mural exhibition will be hosted by heritage site Constitution Hill, in partnership with the Mpumalanga Traditional Art Market.

The Writing on the Wall, an exhibition of contemporary Ndebele murals, will include paintings, contemporary beadwork, Venda pottery, Illala basketry, handmade embroidery, and wire basketry.

Exhibition co-ordinator Gaisang Sathekge said the site prides itself in upholding South Africa’s arts, culture and heritage through exhibitions and educational programmes.

“Through the generous support from the Industrial Development Corporation, the artworks from Mpumalanga will be exhibited in the Women’s Gaol temporary exhibition space, in celebration of… work that is rooted in tradition, transitional and contemporary style,” she said.

“This significant event, allowing communities to interact with artisans, will be based on how skills and traditions have been passed on from one generation to the next, how natural resources influence art development, and how people can work together to achieve a common goal.”

The mission and vision of the Mpumalanga Traditional Art Market is to promote cultural and artistic awareness while building on indigenous knowledge, and to ensure sustainability in the commercialisation of traditional art.

It also aims to promote South African art abroad and to “create economic streams” for artists and their wider communities.

The Writing on the Wall will be at the Women’s Gaol, Constitution Hill, 11 Kotze Street, Braamfontein, from 26 February until 14 March.

An exhibition-related art market will take place on 27 and 28 February, from 10am until 3pm.
