Jozi’s mad dubstep party impresses

NEWTOWN - The time was right for dancing in the streets when the first Mad Decent Block Party outside the USA took place at Mary Fitzgerald Square.

The electronic music event featured acts like Sibot, Dillon Francis and Major Lazer, and attracted partygoers from across the city.

The dubstep and drum and bass party kicked off when Liver took to the stage at 5pm, against a backdrop of a late afternoon sun and the De Villiers Graaf motorway.

Liver was followed by Das Kapital, Sibot, Flosstradamus, Dillon Francis, Major Lazer and Niskerone.

Far from being mere dancers or listeners, the crowd contributed to the atmosphere with props like water pistols, large cardboard cut-outs, and inflatable glowsticks. During Major Lazer’s set, a group of women from the audience had the opportunity to impress with their twerking skills on stage.

A selection of food trucks that sold everything from hot chips to seafood paella kept revellers’ energy levels up throughout the night.

“I was impressed by the energy of the crowd. Every single person was moving,” said partygoer Tamara Arden.

“The musical highlight for the evening was Dillon Francis’ set. He really worked the crowd.”
