Political leader an inspiration for book

Seasoned political journalist and parliamentary reporter Donwald Pressly described the subject of his new book, Lindiwe Mazibuko, as having the right “ingredients that make a good leader and president”.

Pressly uttered these sentiments at the launch of his book, Owning the future: Lindiwe Mazibuko & the changing face of the DA, which focuses on the rise of the young Democratic Alliance parliamentary leader. The book launch took place at the Love Bookstore situated in Melville.

Issues tackled at the book launch included her meteoritic rise to parliamentary leader, the challenges she faced along the way, the importance of family and her view on whether or not she could become president.

“Although some of my detractors questioned whether I was selected because of my race, I knew that I was ready for the task ahead and so was the party,” the outspoken 33-year-old Mazibuko said.

Pressly also spoke about his inspiration for the book and said he “could see that she [Mazibuko] was going places and no one was writing about it”.

He also praised her on the way she tackled criticism mounted against her, especially from the African National Congress. Mazibuko noted that her own official autobiography would come once she was ready.

“It’s not time yet for me to write it but when I’m ready, I will write my own story,” she said.

Also present at the book launch was national spokesperson for the DA, Mmusi Maimane, who chaired the session and questioned Mazibuko and Pressly on the issues covered in the book.
