Prepare for a doodle battle at 1000 Drawings

JOBURG – The city’s bright young things can look forward to art, bands, graffiti and a dinosaur at this year’s Night of 1000 Drawings.

The mass art exhibition for charity will take place at Newtown’s Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in November.

The doors will open at 6pm, and the artwork will be on view until 8pm. Thereafter begins the race to get a sticker on a coveted A5 masterpiece.

At 9pm, the artwork will be taken down for collection by its new owners, and the party will begin.

Organiser Angus Campbell said,”Four bands will take to the stage, followed by DJs. A live doodle battle will take place among the crowd, and party-goers can also expect to see Jozi’s hottest graffiti artists battle it out.”

Event partners Converse, Adobe and Red Bull donated prizes for the battling artists, as well as for those who created artwork for the exhibition.

He invited people to join the team at the regular doodle events held around the city.

“A5 paper and drawing implements are supplied at the city’s hippest venues. People can also drop off their A5 creations at one of the partner coffee shops around town,” said Campbell.

Paballo, 1000 Drawings’ main beneficiary, feeds and supports the inner city homeless. The charity is run and funded by volunteers and donors.

Another charity to benefit from the exhibition is Mmabana, which began when one of Paballo’s success stories, Nosiku Kalonga, returned to her home in Zambia and established an organisation that would do for the children of Choma what Paballo did for her here.

“This year’s third beneficiary is Intuthuko Embroideries, a non-profit organisation in Etwatwa that has trained 40 previously unemployed women in embroidery and sewing,” said Campbell.

“The closure of the Rosebank market this year saw the organisation lose their main source of income, and they have struggled ever since.”

Campbell said he still needed volunteers to man sections of the exhibition spaces, and sell tickets and artwork stickers on the night.

“Volunteers will receive a small meal, as well as free entry to the exhibition and after-party,” he said.

Night of 1000 Drawings will take place on 7 November at Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, Miriam Makeba Street, Newtown, from 6pm.
