Film society commemorates Danish heroism

A special film screening by the Majestic Film Society this month will commemorate the heroism of those Danes who saved their Jewish countrymen from certain annihilation during World War II.

Miracle at Midnight, a dramatisation of that rescue mission, will be shown at the military history museum.

Starring Sam Waterston and Mia Farrow, the film tells the story of Christian couple Dr Karl and Doris Koster and their two children.

Dr Koster, chief surgeon of Christiana Hospital, first used his position to protect a young resistance fighter from the Nazis.

Three years into the Nazi occupation of Denmark, Koster found out that the arrest of Danish Jews would begin at midnight, at the beginning of Rosh Hashanah.

Determined to help, the Kosters hid Rabbi Ben Abrams and his family, and soon became an integral part of the mission to transport more than 7 000 Jews to Sweden.

The film will be introduced by Radio Today broadcaster and film commentator Selwyn Klass, and will be followed by a light hot supper and wine.

The screening will take place on 27 October at the Museum of Military History auditorium, 22 Erlswold Way, Saxonwold, at 5.30pm.
