JOBURG – Parkwood’s Goethe-Institut has an exciting programme of exhibitions and events at this year’s Joburg Art Fair.

The fair will take place from 27 to 29 September at the Sandton Convention Centre.

According to spokesperson Benjamin Keuffel, the institute’s annual involvement in the fair was “in line with our goal to broaden and deepen co-operation and global networks in the arts while furthering a Pan-African conversation”.

The institute’s BRICS exhibition will offer visitors a selection of video works by artists from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Curator Alfons Hug said, “By calling for a multipolar, polycentric world order, BRICS has become a mouthpiece and a role model.”

In this exhibition, Hug considered the ways artists started to define new identities in countries defined by rapid change.

On 27 September at 4.30pm, the launch of the book Condition Report: A symposium on building art institutions in Africa will see a panel discussion by Koyo Kouoh, Gabi Ngcobo and Zen Marie, moderated by Katharina von Ruckteschell.

On 28 September the Collectors Forum’s first round table discussion on Collecting Contemporary Art from Africa will take place at 12.30pm.

The discussion will feature panelists Riason Naidoo of the South African National Gallery, Samuel Sidibe of the National Museum of Mali, Jeanetta Blignaut of the Spier Foundation, Bomi Odufunade of Dash & Rallo, and Kenneth Montague of Wedge Curatorial Projects.

Federico Freschi will moderate the discussion.

The second Collectors Forum round table discussion on Collecting and the Evolution of Consciousness will take place on 29 September at 12pm.

The discussion will feature panelists Samallie Kiyingi, Oba Nsugbe, Emile Stipp, and Warren Siebrits, and will be moderated by Federico Freschi.

The Bureau de Cinema Africain, a project by Bridget Baker and Bianca Baldi, will launch its publication Act 1: Aerolithe Illusion, in association with the institute and Clarkes Bookshop. Date and time were yet to be confirmed at time of publication.
