In a quest to revive the spirit of rugby, Pridwin Preparatory School hosted the Pridwin 7s Rugby Festival on 4 May in Melrose.
There were 10 preparatory schools that met at the festival for fun games of rugby. The schools that took part included Orchards Primary, St David’s Marist Inanda, St Peter’s Boys Preparatory School and the Ridge School.
Proudly so, Pridwin won.
“Years ago when we were starting out, we only had five schools participating but now the number of schools has increased to 10, so it is quite a success,” said Pridwin principal Selwyn Marx.
“Every boy in our school has to find an extra-mural activity they can participate in.”
The festival has become an annual much-anticipated event and is aimed at growing and developing talent across Gauteng.
The marimba boys also set the tone of the event with their beats.
Tyghe Muller, a learner at Pridwin school said, “This tournament is the biggest out of all the preparatory schools’ and we are the only school that hosts every year.”
The Pridwin Preparatory School holds the event to ensure that rugby remains one of the popular sports in South Africa. The sport is now recognised as an Olympic sport, making its debut in the 2016 Summer Olympics.
The game originated in Melrose, Scotland, and now some 130 years later, it is being played in Melrose, Johannesburg.
