KFC Mini Cricket comes to a climax at Rosebank Primary

The major aim of Mini Cricket is to provide a game of cricket in its simplest form for young children and enjoyment at the same time and to popularise the game of cricket.

In the spirit of getting children active, the 2018 round of KFC Mini-Cricket matches, which kicked off in February, will come to a conclusion during the KFC Mini-Cricket Area Festival at Rosebank Primary School.

The major aim of Mini Cricket is to provide a game of cricket in its simplest form for young children and enjoyment at the same time and to popularise the game of cricket. Eligible ages for Mini Cricket are boys between the ages of 4 and 10 years, girls aged 4 to 13 years and pre-schoolers aged between 4 to 5 years.

“Socially, the kids make good friends and form long-term friendships,” said Frank Zagwazatha, area coordinator at KFC Mini Cricket for the Johannesburg North region. “Different schools [participate] every week and the kids are encouraged, regardless of the result, to shake hands in the spirit of sportsmanship.”

Participating schools at the area festival, which will be held on 15 March, include Craighall Primary School, Delta Park School, Emmarentia, Parkhurst, Rosebank, Fairways and Saxonwold primary schools, as well as Japari School and King David Victory Park.

“Parents should play with their kids in the garden, using a softball and not worry about breaking windows,” added Zagwazatha. “From there it should go out onto the fields at schools. I encourage every single school to take part in this programme as it is the start of introducing the sport of cricket to kids at an early age.

“Once they build that interest at an early age, the sky becomes the limit and they can play as far as they can.”
