Kingsmead pack a punch in the swimming pool

ROSEBANK – Kingsmead College impress in the pool.

En route to topping a pool comprising St Mary’s School, Reddam House and Crawford Prep, the Kingsmead College U13 water polo team called on their A game at the St Mary’s U13 Water Polo Championships on 17 February.

Kingsmead’s first team water polo side, playing in the Rodean Cup at Roedean School on the same day, also impressed as they beat St Dunstan’s College 11–6 in the 9th /10th place play-offs.

Events then came to a climax when Kingsmead College’s Old Mutual/Roedean Water Polo Prestige Cup partner school, Parkhurst Primary, took to the pool at the gala event following the conclusion of the Rodean Cup.

Now in its eighth year, the annual swimming event has become a red-letter event on the water polo calendar. Ten top Gauteng schools battle it out for bragging rights in the pool by duelling it out for the prestigious Prestige Cup.

Sponsored by the Old Mutual, a prerequisite for the schools competing in this tournament is to have a CSI Learn-to-Swim component. Each participating school has partnered with an under-resourced school or community and has implemented a sustainable programme – which teaches swimming or water polo at its partnership school or community.

The prize money received by the top three schools at the Old Mutual/Roedean Water Polo Prestige Cup is used to develop the learn-to-swim programme further in their partnership schools or communities.

“Here, schools got to showcase the young and underprivileged swimmers that they have been working with over the past season,” said Kingsmead College sports coordinator, Nic Pruett. “Old Mutual can be very proud of their involvement and growth of young kids around Gauteng.”
