Glenhazel school hosts in-house sporting competition

GLENHAZEL – The best performers in the inter-schools competition will go on to represent the cluster at the regional stage.

On 9 February Glenhazel Primary School hosted their annual in-house school competition in preparation for the inter-schools challenge.

The competition comprised various sporting activities including long jump, flat race, relay as well as long distance running.

The competition served as a preparation for the mega event where they will face seven other schools in their cluster.

Nobuhle Zondo, a teacher as well as sports committee member at the school, said the competition features grades R to 7. “We have Grade R and Grade 1 competing separately from the Grade 2s to 7s which is the main focus.

“We divide them into three groups to compete and at the end, we select the nine competent athletes who will participate in the inter-schools challenge which will be held here at the Glenhazel Primary School soon.”

At the inter-schools competition, each school provide two athletes for each race or activity, she said.

Then, depending on their performance, those who do well are then selected to represent the schools’ cluster at the regional stage.

“Athletes are awarded medals and trophies depending on their performance after the inter-schools competition. This also serves as a platform for our children to discover and nurture their talent and skills in sports,” said Hudson Lisata, also a sports committee member.

Patricia Ngwasheng, also a member of the school’s sports committee, added that athletes participate according to their own age groups otherwise you will be disqualified. “This is part of the curriculum and only children who are between the ages of eight and 13 years old are allowed to compete.”
