Thirty-three St John’s water polo players selected for Gauteng team

HOUGHTON – The boys represented Gauteng in the inter-provincial tournament held in Pietermaritzburg and Grahamstown.

Thirty-three St John’s College boys were selected to represent Gauteng Province Schools Water Polo and participated in this year’s inter-provincial tournament.

The tournament, which took place from 7 to 12 December in Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown, hosted dozens of teams from around the country.

The St John’s boys were part of U13 up to U19 teams which competed as Central Gauteng.

Vladimir Trninic, the director of water polo at St John’s and convenor of the coaches committee for Schools Waterpolo South Africa said St John’s had the most players selected for the Central Gauteng teams. “In the last 20 years, St John’s has been one of the strongest water polo schools,” he said.

The Central Gauteng teams performed well throughout the tournament with the U13, U14 and U15 teams taking the runners-up spot. The U16 team won their age group.

Trninic added that the competition this year had been incredibly tough, especially against the Western Cape teams who had proven to be very strong.
