Kingsmead College in Rosebank celebrates successful water polo season

ROSEBANK – Kingsmead College water polo teams have celebrated various victories throughout the season.

Kingsmead College‘s water polo teams celebrated a successful year in the school’s fast-growing sport with two of its teams being promoted to the Gauteng Schools A league.

The college’s 1st team and U15As won their respective divisions in the B league very comfortably and have now been promoted to the A league. The 1st team finished 12 points clear of their nearest rival and the U15As won by 18 points. The 2nd team and U15Bs will play in the B league next year.

Nick Pruett, the head coach for water polo said, “It’s been fantastic to see the dedication of the girls, and how much fun they are having in their season. Knowing that the girls truly love the game so much that they get their friends involved is an awesome feeling.”

As well as success in the league, a young 1st team did well at the St Anne’s Diocesan College tournament, which takes place in Hilton each year and sees 12 girls’ schools competing. Kingsmead finished in sixth place this year.

The U15A team finished in ninth place at the Collegiate Girls’ High School tournament in Port Elizabeth in early October, beating the likes of Diocesan School for Girls and Kingswood College along the way.

“I think a highlight is the sheer competitiveness and drive across all the teams. They won the B league comfortably in both sections but were very competitive at all of their respective tournaments throughout the year. The girls have shown what they are capable of and they are determined to get better each practice, match and improve on a weekly basis.”

Kingsmead College was also well represented in the Gauteng schools water polo teams this year with 13 players selected. Four players were selected for the U12A team, three in U15 teams, and six in the U14 teams, three of whom are in the A team and three in the B team.

“This year our Grade 12s set a fantastic standard and that work ethic has been passed onto our younger players. This is really the foundation of what we do, and we have some great athletes with the right mindset to help us along our way.”
