New coach of Old Edwardians hockey team is set to up the game

HOUGHTON – Old Eds has new hockey coach.

Bringing a wealth of hockey experience is Colin Fieldin who has been elected as the new coach of the Old Edwardians hockey team.

Born in Bulawayo, Fieldin came to South Africa at an early age and matriculated from Sutherland High school in Centurion. He played hockey for Northern Transvaal at U18 and U21 level before gaining his provincial colours in 1998.

At Pretoria Boys High School coached the 1st hockey team, before accepting a post at King Edward School in May last year where he soon became director of hockey.

When asked about his plans for hockey at the club, Fieldin said, “We are tired of coming third and want to finish higher.” He felt that there was a disparity in the hockey league and said, “Beating someone seven or eight nil one week is not good preparation for playing the [tough opponents] likes of UJ.”

Fieldin also felt strongly that hockey players should be encouraged to rejoin club teams once they finish their varsity degree. “This would strengthen club hockey and in turn strengthen provincial hockey.”

When asked about schoolboys playing club hockey, he said, “If they are good enough, I will play them. But I won’t play a schoolboy just for the sake of playing a schoolboy.”
