Reddam House Preparatory School through to the Danone Nations Cup Gauteng provincial finals

BEDFORDVIEW – They will join the other nine Gauteng district winners at the provincial finals.

Reddam House Preparatory School in Bedfordview has sailed through to the Danone Nations Cup Gauteng provincial finals after beating King David School Sandton.

Reddam secured their spot in the finals when they won the Johannesburg Primary School Association Danone Nations Cup finals. There were 17 schools that participated in this tournament which were divided into three groups and played a round-robin format with the league leaders going into the semi-finals.

Reddam made it into the semis as the best runners-up after losing 2–1 to King David Sandton but they met them again in the final and beat them 4–1.

They will now join the other nine Gauteng district winners at the provincial finals in Reiger Park on 17 June.

Reddam’s coach Kyron Bibi, said this was the first time that their school has taken part in the Danone Nations Cup.

Bibi, who used to attend Reddam and is now a physical education instructor and cricket, soccer and rugby coach at the school, said he was impressed with the tournament.

“It was exceptionally well run, and there was a lot of talent on display,” he said. “The final match against King David was intense and our players were nervous and we allowed them to score an early goal.”

He added that his players got their confidence back when they equalised and then took control of the game.

“I will not be surprised if a couple of the boys reach professional level one day.”

King David’s coach Seth Pearson said the three-day tournament had taught him a lot about young players in a competitive environment. He added that it is critical for them to play in such tournaments because it built confidence and stronger personalities.

Ariel Diner (10), King David’s striker was the star of his team after scoring six goals in the tournament.
