Old Eds on the up

HOUGHTON – Old Eds women's hockey team has been excelling on the field.

In the 80s, Old Eds women’s hockey first team won the National Champion of Champions on more than one occasion.

Led by then Springbok captain, Ros Howell and boasting a number of national and provincial players, they dominated the league during that era.

Following the success of the men’s hockey first team over the past three years in the premier league, the club decided that perhaps the same could apply to the women’s team.

It was a tall order and some very large boots needed filling if they were to be compared to players of the past.

Gabriela Garcia the team’s captain has been able to form a squad of 16 players from the staff of King Edward Preparatory School and King Edward Vll School, augmented them with some players from other clubs and they entered the third league.

So far they have played four matches, won them all and scored 28 goals without conceding a single goal.

Should they remain unbeaten throughout the season, there is a chance they could be promoted to two leagues and be playing in the league below the premier league. This would make the recruitment of more and better players much easier.

Whatever the outcome of this initial foray, the club intends fielding two women’s teams in the league next year.
