WATCH: Big Mitch impresses on U19 debut

JOBURG – KES cricketer continues his good form as he helps national team to first win.

King Edward VII School 1st XI cricket captain Mitchell van Buuren impressed in his first outing for the South African U19 cricket team against Sri Lanka.

The U19’s drew first blood when they beat Sri Lanka by 16 runs in the first of three Youth ODIs in Colombo on 9 July. Van Buuren, on debut, took four wickets and scored 29 runs to help lead his side to victory.

“When I got to the ground I was a bit nervous, representing my country for the first time,” he said.

“It was unbelievable for me, I enjoyed every second of it and coming out with a win was amazing.”

The prolific right-handed batsman had a phenomenal season last year as he scored 1 060 runs at an average of 39 for the KES first team.

The 17-year-old, affectionately known as Big Mitch by his teammates, has been rewarded for his hard work and perseverance.

He was named the Gauteng U17 Player of the Year at the annual Gauteng Cricket Board Awards earlier this year.
