WATCH: Red oarsman shines

JOBURG – Young King Edward rower is destined to shine on the world stage.

King Edward VII School’s rowing team member, Thabelo Masutha, has been selected for the South African U18 doubles to compete in the World Championships in Rotterdam in Netherlands.

His rowing partner is Luc Daffarn of Rondebosch Boys’ High School.

Masutha has a special aptitude for rowing and is affectionately referred to as a ‘gentle giant’ by his peers.

The 17-year-old has been in fine form over the past season and set a new U16 course record at the National Championships at Roodeplaat last year.

Masutha said it had always been his dream to make the national team.

Despite having started the sport a few years ago, Masutha said his success was the result of hard work. “I am planning to go to the national finals again next year so I will have to make sure that I am on top of my game all the time and get acknowledged,” Masutha said.

He also thanked all his mates and the coaches who have helped him get where he is today.

King Edward VII School rowing master Ed Goodier was full of praise for the young man and said his dedication and hard work made it easy for him to coach the youngster. He added that Masutha was able to adapt to different conditions and did not buckle under pressure. “He is very laid back and relaxed when it comes to competitions. He does not seem to feel the pressure that much. He is a very cool customer when it comes to racing, which I think is a good asset for him.”

Masutha’s selection comes hot on the heels of a successful tour of the United Kingdom by the school’s U16 rowing team.
