Orchards school rugby boys succeed in Monaco

ORCHARDS - Orchards Primary School U12 rugby boys jetted off to Monaco on 7 April where they participated in the St Devote Tournament and won the Bowls Final cup.

The boys were privileged to get a send-off from President Jacob Zuma and the Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula. The president shared words of encouragement with the boys and urged them to bring back the cup from the tournament.

The tour to France and Monaco was an opportunity of a lifetime for the boys as they got to explore a whole different part of the world and play against international teams.

Deputy principal of the school and coach of the team Selywn January said, “The first game was a tough one for the boys, but they managed to redeem themselves in the matches thereafter,” adding that winning the cup has boosted their confidence levels on the rugby field.

January said another highlight for the boys was when Princess Charlene of Monaco came to greet the team before the tournament.

“We are truly grateful to the Gauteng Department of Education, South African Rugby Union, Rugby Legends and Golden Lions Rugby Union for this fantastic opportunity,” January concluded.
