HOUGHTON – St John’s College Grade 8 pupil Brandon Wijtenburg and crew mate Todd Fisher were placed second in their class at the Hobie Dragoon World Championships.

The two were among 30 South Africans at the event held in Travemunder, Germany, on the Baltic Sea, which also saw competitors from Germany, Belgium and Holland participate.

According to the school’s Toni Williams, Wijtenburg and Fisher entered the Hobie Dragoon youth section of the regatta, and sailed 17 races to achieve 2nd place in their class.

A total of 12 boats were sent in a container by Hobie Cat South Africa to Germany for the regatta.

“The regatta formed part of the Travemunder Woche, the second largest sailing event in the world. Every year, hundreds of thousands of watersport fans from all over the world descend on the city to experience the unique combination of international sailing and maritime festival,” said Williams.

This year marked the 124th anniversary of the Travemunder Woche.

On their return to South Africa, they and other athletes who had won medals for the country, were invited by Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula to a gala awards evening in Cape Town.
