St Teresa’s School learner’s swimming accolades prove she thrives in water

Tyra Penn's love for bath time as an infant was the first indicator of her passion for swimming.

St Teresa’s School learner Tyra Penn wants to obtain her goal of swimming professionally, one Midmar mile at a time.

She began swimming training when she was in pre-school and progressed to a competitive swimming club called Waterborn Randburg Virgin Active in April 2022.

“I have swum in many galas over the past 12 months, including the Central Gauteng Aquatics (CGA) championships in December 2022. My highlight this year was swimming at the level three (the 15-18 years age group) regional swimming gala at the end of March where I entered 11 events and swam in eight finals achieving: silver in the 100m breaststroke, gold in the 50m breaststroke and bronze in the 200m individual medley, etc.”

Tyra Penn is all smiles with her swimming medals.

Tyra said although she was unsure about her career plans after high school, she wanted to be involved with sports, particularly swimming.

The Grade 8 learner added that her latest achievements were obtained from open swimming which is a form of competing in open bodies of water like lakes, rivers, seas, etc.

“My achievements include: completing the Midmar Mile on February 12 in 00:24:54 placing me 12th for U13s, I also swam the Midmar Mile ladies 14-30 years event in a time of 00:26: 14 placing me third for U13 girls and 108th out of 918 swimmers, etc.”

According to Tyra although her achievements make her happy, they also remain a constant inspiration for her upcoming races.
