Locals showed up in droves and in their sportswear at the Johannesburg Zoo for the Zoo Trot and run, on October 9.
Joburg Zoo’s executive manager Louis Gordon said that although the zoo trot was on hold for the last two years, it was in its 22nd year.
“The aim of the 5km and 10km walk or run is to make people aware of the zoo and the animals and have a different type of walk because there are a lot of fun runs in the area (parkrun) and they are all free.”
Gordon added, “We also try to do education awareness during these runs and walks. We began this morning by talking about owls and why they’re important for the environment.”
A 5km runner Boitshepo Moswa said although the run was tough, he enjoyed it.
“I haven’t been running since the pandemic began, so today’s 5km run was difficult but I made the most out of it and enjoyed it.”
Jennifer Matthews added she opted for a 5km walk because it was therapeutic.
“I enjoy Sunday walks because they bring a sense of calm. I’m glad I came to the zoo because I can also see different animals I don’t get to see on a daily basis.”
