The Wanderers Club to launch AirBadminton

ILLOVO – The Wanderers Club in Illovo will launch AirBadminton on its premises on November 20.

The Wanderers Club in Illovo will launch a new variation of badminton on November 20. This variation is called AirBadminton.

According to information provided by the club, AirBadminton, developed by the Badminton World Federation, is designed to create an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to participate in outdoor sports. It can be played on different surfaces including hard surfaces, grass and sand, and in parks, gardens, streets, playgrounds and beaches. It is already being played around the world.

The sport can be played by anyone, regardless of age, ability and level of experience. It is also an inclusive sport for people with disabilities and para-badminton players. Research shows that the sport can prevent stress, reduce the risk of myopia in children and is a healthy, active and safe sport for all.

The equipment required to play the sport includes rackets (the same as a traditional badminton racket), and a specific shuttle (AirShuttle). It is possible to play AirBadminton with an existing shuttlecock, but the game and court have been specially developed based on the characteristics of the AirShuttle itself, which is designed to make it easy to play outdoors and racquets are typically lighter than traditional badminton rackets.

This exciting sport can be played on rectangular and symmetric areas with two metres of ‘dead’ zone each side of the net. If the AirShuttle touches the ground on this area, it’s a fault.

The community is invited to attend the launch which will be near the club’s top cricket oval at 08:00 on November 20. There will be professional players showcasing their abilities and AirBadminton shuttlecocks will be on sale.
It is hoped the sport will be added to the club’s sports offering.
