Dunkeld Bowls Club won the Wednesday Midweek League recently, making huge strides to become recognised in bigger leagues.
Former president of the club and current member Chad Joseph said he was proud to see the club stepping up and winning competitions.
The four-member team that won the Midweek League beat Belgravia Bowling Club in the final on 21 April. The team comprised Isaac Goliath, Warwick Sagar, Mike Bolel and Max Hurwitz.
He noted that members Andre de Villiers and Ian Donaldson also did the club proud by making it into the semi-finals of the Johannesburg Bowls Association Men’s Pairs competition.
“We have been making huge strides in attracting members and are hoping to move up from the second division and be promoted into the premier league,” said Joseph.
He encouraged anyone who was interested in bowls between the ages of 13 and 95 to join.
“I only started bowls at age 39, but wished I had begun the sport earlier in life. It’s the one sport where you can play against some of the greatest players in the world and not only is it fun, but relaxing and has a wonderful competitive element.”
Joseph commented that the sport was not only good for competition but also a great way to meet new people and teaches good hand-eye coordination.
“There’s fresh air and a great social element. The worst that could happen is that you might enjoy it,” chuckled Joseph.
He welcomed visitors to visit the restaurant and play some bowls to find out what they are missing out on.
The club currently has 45 members with a huge social following.
