Local canoeist raises funds for those in need

During lockdown, paddlers become creative about ways to keep fit within their home confines.

Parkview resident and learner at St David’s Marist Inanda Jess Webber (12) participated in the lockdown Covid-19 challenge to support Canoeing South Africa in their efforts to provide food parcels to underprivileged paddling members across the country.

Jess is currently the top Gauteng U12 guppy and member of the St David’s Marist Inanda rowing team.

Jess took up the #Canoeing4Covid19Challenge dedicating his contribution to all the guppy paddlers (12 years and under) that needed support during challenging times.

Large numbers of the paddlers from across the country participated in the challenge to purchase food hampers for the underprivileged members who have been part of the Community Youth Development Programme started some 20 years ago at various clubs in South Africa.

Paddlers who contributed in donations were among well-known international and national top paddlers and race winners/title holders as well as young juniors and ordinary non-achieving local paddlers with one goal – to help those in need.

Various exercises including indoor cycling, canoeing ergo, push ups, sit ups and more took place online in order to fundraise for hampers and vouchers.
