Old Parktonian Bowls Club reopens safely

Lawn bowls is back at the Bordeaux venue and players are thrilled about it.

Music is pumping and ooohs and aaahs ring out a few times a week at Old Parktonian Bowls Club.

Lawn bowls is back at the Bordeaux venue and players are thrilled about it.

“Whilst bowls will never be the same again, our members are happy to be back on the greens again,” said club chairperson, Eileen Breakey.

“Currently, only club members who have prebooked a game are allowed on the premises, provided they are wearing a face mask or face shield, they sanitise, have their temperature taken and they have to complete the attendance register. Players arriving with no face mask or face shield are turned away. No spectators are allowed yet.”

She said the greens were kept in excellent condition by greenskeeper Neil Bell and his team before bowlers were allowed to play.

Furthermore, the club’s Covid-19 committee, convened by Gary Austin, had the clubhouse cleaned and sanitised in accordance with required protocols set out by Minister of Sport, Nathi Mthethwa, and Bowls South Africa.

“Some internal competitions will resume soon as well as fun days, all the while keeping to protocol and ensuring the safety of our players,” added Breakey.

“During this difficult time, thanks must go to our members who continue to donate generously towards expenses and the existence of our bowling club.”
