Watch: Wits Tang Soo Do Club stays active with exercises and fun challenges at home

PARKTOWN – Master Gregory Hart also gave the martial artists exercises to do at home that would keep their muscles strong.

The Wits Tang Soo Do Club has not slowed down much during the lockdown.

With exercises and fun challenges of its own, the martial arts group has kept its members active and fit through their training and adventures at home.”We started a challenge to get our members active during the lockdown before Wits opened online,” explained the club’s media liaison, Simphiwe Zulu.

“Every two days, we give a fitness challenge and ask for videos to post on social media pages. We called this the #TangSooDontStop challenge. This was a lot of fun and it got our members active online as well.”

Master Gregory Hart also gave the martial artists exercises to do at home that would keep their muscles strong. Zulu added that the club could not compete in tournaments during the lockdown, and the much-anticipated Arnold Classic Africa was postponed.

“We usually have our grading in May which can’t take place due to the lockdown restrictions. We can’t continue with the syllabus which means that grading has to be postponed until we can get enough training sessions to complete the syllabus.”

So the martial artists are training at home, although many have struggled to continue training with the videos due to data costs.” Missing a few weeks of training is not the end of the world. It just means that you’ll have to put in more work to get back where you left off.”

However, martial arts is not just a physical sport, Zulu said. It involves exercising one’s mental muscles as well and offers some downtime from stressful situations one may face. “With this being said, we recommend practising martial arts as a way to keep positive. The discipline exercised through martial arts is something to be pleased with. If that’s too much, then regular exercise helps as well.”

Zulu concluded we should all keep an open mind and stay active. This will help us stay positive during the lockdown.
