Balfour’s Greek Queens open Sasol Women’s League on a good start while Alex’s Birds do it on a sour note

JOBURG – Greek Queens open Sasol Women's League on a good start while Alex's Birds stumble.

The Gauteng provincial Sasol Women’s League got underway on 29 February on a sour note for Alex’s Bluebirds Ladies but on a good one for Balfour-based Croesus Ladies.

The Greek Queens, as Croesus Ladies are commonly known, opened their account of the league with three points on a silver platter when Vaal University of Technology (VUT) Ladies failed to pitch on time to honour their fixture with the Greek Queens on 29 February at Northview High School.

Greek Queens team manager Maria Athanassouli said the VUT Ladies arrived late for the fixture and the referee decided to award it as a walkover to Croesus, which means they will be awarded three points.

The Birds, on the other hand, had a showdown with Wits University Ladies at Alexandra Stadium on 1 March. Birds founding director Malvin Khumalo, who is also the secretary-general of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association, said his team had opened the scoring but failed to defend their lead.

Wits came back strong to score three goals to no reply and collected the three points at stake. “It was unfortunate that we did not capitalise on the numerous chances that we got but the team showed character and we are hopeful as we go forward. This could be signs of good times to come,” he said.

Croesus will be away this weekend to Springs Home Sweepers and so will the Birds, to whipping girls of the league VUT Ladies.
