Old Eds cricketers beat the weather in President’s League match against Randburg

HOUGHTON – Without the help of the DLS method, Old Eds batted out of their socks to beat Randburg Cricket Club.

Old Eds cricketers beat the weather as much as they beat their opponents in their latest President’s League match, and now look to defend their title.

The side is the reigning champions of the league, having won twice in the last three years.

The pressure is on Old Eds to retain the trophy and captain Anold Ndindwa believes his players have what it takes to do so. “We are still contesting the league and are number three on the log with six games left to play,” he said.

“Our team has played together for three years and we have created a culture where we play for each other. We have found a way to be friends, more than just a team.”

Windy conditions and drizzle shortly before the game made it an easy decision when Randburg Cricket Club won the toss at their own grounds on 1 March. They chose to bowl first in the 50-over match but Old Eds batsmen played aggressively nonetheless. While wickets fell throughout the innings, every batsman made sure to contribute before going out.

When the rain stopped play after 22 overs, Old Eds had 133 runs for the loss of three wickets. The league does not utilise the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method and so when the innings was reduced to 36 overs, Old Eds had to resume on the same score without the hope of an adjusted target for their opponents.

The positive batting was raised another bar and Old Eds finished on 227 for seven. Tabiso Ndlovu top-scored with 42 while Cameron Brunner, Conah Macfarlane and Josh Lang all chipped in with 30s.

Randburg petered along gradually in their innings, with wickets tumbling throughout until they finished on 107 for nine after all 36 overs. Like the batsmen shared the runs, Old Eds bowlers shared the wickets between themselves.

John Turner had three wickets for 19 runs, Guarav Sirohi two for nine and Ndindwa two for 14.
