Cancer hit for six

SAXONWOLD – CHOC Cows play cricket for a good cause week in and week out.

Pigs cannot fly but cows certainly can play cricket.

So it is at Zoo Lake Sports Club and other venues around Joburg where the CHOC Cows cricket team plies their trade in the last man stands cricket league.

The 10-year-old team, previously known as BBL Night Watchmen, changed their name and outfit three years ago when teammate Grant Bain lost his 20-month-old daughter, Jessica, to cancer.

The team decided to raise funds for CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation, a cause they felt even more strongly about two years later after Bain’s other daughter, Georgia, was diagnosed with brain cancer. She too succumbed to the illness in December last year.

So now the team raises awareness for children with cancer in the last man stands cricket they play every week, as well as various events they host.

“We have done a couple of charity events for CHOC but we have a big one coming up on 4 April which will be played at the Wanderers Stadium,” said long-time CHOC Cows player, Dale Verster.

The event will feature a number of corporate teams playing cricket in memory of Georgia Bain.

Verster invited businesses and families to get involved and keep an eye out on the CHOC website for more information about the event.

“It should be a full day involving the team, hopefully raising a lot of money for CHOC and it will go a long way in making the lives of many of the children suffering from cancer a lot more pleasant.”
