St John’s athlete wins 100m race and sets a personal best

HOUGHTON – Kieren Louw, who trains at the University of Johannesburg, hopes to up his 100m time to 10,60 seconds.

St John’s College Grade 11 Kieren Louw recently competed in the Ruimsig leg of the Puma School of Speed meeting where he ran a fantastic final in the 100m race, winning in a time of 10.74 seconds – a personal best.

He also qualified for the 200m sprint by setting the third-quickest time but opted not to compete so he could concentrate on the 100m race which was due to be run 20 minutes later.

Kieren is a provincial athlete who has represented Central Gauteng Athletics for the past three years. He participated in the South African Championships in 2018 and has previously won the Puma School of Speed 100m in 2018.

School athletics is currently off-season, however, Kieren continues to train with his coach at the University of Johannesburg.

He maintains his fitness by training three times a week and going to the gym as well as participating in many races.

“I even had to be disciplined and follow a training programme while I was on holiday in December,” he said. “I am running another Puma School of Speed in Pretoria soon, then its Gauteng champs and I am hoping to reach the 100m and 200m finals in the SA Champs in March.”

Kieren said he wanted to get his times down to 10.60 seconds in the 100m and 21.50 in the 200m.
