Sports administration titan and community builder laid to rest

ALEXANDRA – ANLFA president Maisha Molepo, said Selolo served the association with love and dedication, refusing to accept any idea that will bring division and disrepute to the organisation.


The Alex Northrand Local Football Association (ANLFA) life president and one of the country’s top sports administrators, Moses Selolo was laid to rest on 18 January 2020 in Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg.

The 73-year-old Selolo died on 10 January after a short illness. He was described by many as a man who sacrificed his life to help build a better Alexandra.

His administrative role in the soccer fraternity started when he became the deputy secretary of the Alexandra Football Association (AFA) under the leadership of the late Leepile Taunyane. He was elected the chairperson of the association in 1987 and voluntarily step down from the position in 2001.

Speaking during the funeral service held in Sankopano Community Centre, the South African Football Association (Safa) president Danny Jordaan said Selolo sacrificed his quality time for his family in order to make his contribution to developing local football.

“[He] prioritised community. He sacrificed his life to make South African football what it is today. His role and contributions to the 2010 World Cup here in South Africa will not be forgotten. Some of his legacies that the country will always remember him for is a number of best sports administrators produced during his lifetime,” Jordaan said.

The secretary of African National Congress (ANC) in Greater Johannesburg Region, Dada Morero described Selolo as a giant of community development who offered his leadership skills until his last days. “We have converged in Alexandra today to pay our last respect and give a befitting farewell to one of the many unsung heroes of our struggle and unsung heroes in the soccer fraternity, Bra Moss. On the 10th of January, the giant in the community of Alexandra took his last breath. He was not born, got a certificate and died, but he was born and served the community throughout his life,” Morero said.

Selolo is survived by his wife Agnes, his sons Frith and Hadley, grandchildren Lethabo and Othile, four brothers and two sisters.
