‘Highlands Park coach Owen Da Gama is still a member of the pride and we stand by him’

BALFOUR PARK – Will Highlands Park coach Owen Da Gama live to see another win for the Lions of the North?

Absa Premiership side Highlands Park FC has refuted claims that coach Owen Da Gama is no longer a proud member of the Lions of the North pride following a patch of bad results.

“We would like to put it on record that we’re not about to fire the coach nor has he gone AWOL and further straighten the record on statements made regarding the apparent resignation of our coach.

“We take this opportunity to dismiss the statement with the contempt it deserves and reinforce the fact that team coach Owen Da Gama has not resigned despite a patch of bad results and remains a loyal member of the pride,” said one of the club directors, Sinky Mnisi.

Mnisi added that the club had been inundated with calls and messages from supporters of the team seeking clarity on the coach’s whereabouts. “As the club management and directors, we fully support Da Gama in his vision for the club and reiterate our support for his technical team and express our confidence in him and the entire technical team on their vision and turnaround strategy they are working on to redeem the club in the next coming matches.”

Mnisi said the team took collective responsibility for all that had transpired and was currently hard at work to look to redeem itself and appease supporters starting with the match against Orlando Pirates at the Orlando Stadium this weekend.

The Lions of the North, as Highlands Park are affectionately known to avid supporters, currently occupies eighth spot on the Absa Premiership log standings. The team has been blowing hot and cold this season and their current ‘rumoured’ problems emanated from the backdrop of their 3–0 loss to Kaizer Chiefs in the Amakhosi’s 50th birthday celebratory match at the FNB Stadium and a humiliating 4–1 defeat at home to premiership rookies Stellenbosch.

Only time will tell whether Da Gama, who is reported to have taken the latest losses badly, especially the loss to Stellenbosch and more so at home in front of their avid fans, lives to win another match, especially against a rejuvenated Buccaneers this coming weekend.
