ROSEBANK – The Gazette has compiled a list of our favourite sports stories from the year.

The Rosebank Killarney Gazette has reported on a number of exciting and inspirational sports stories during 2019. Here’s a recap of some of our top stories:

In September, Parktown High School for Girls learner Caitlin Rooskrantz became the first South African to win gold for her bar routine at the World Challenge Cup in Hungary. She later competed in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Germany, qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Games. We will keep our eyes on this top gymnast as she reaches for the stars at the Olympics in July next year.

The Rockies Gerald Fox Memorial Run is always an exciting event on the sports calendar. The event ended at the Johannesburg Zoo this year, with runners competing in either the 21.1km, 10km or 5km routes through the suburbs of Saxonwold, Forest Town and Parkwood. The proceeds from the event were donated to the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo.

The annual SPAR Women’s Challenge brought about much excitement on 6 October. Helalia Johannes clinched the win on the day with 2019 Comrades champion Gerda Steyn in second place and former Joburg champion Irvette van Zyl in third. Melrose’s Sonja Laxton recorded her 100th SPAR Women’s Challenge run at the event – a massive achievement.

A weekend of fun old-school rugby was enjoyed at Pirates Sports Club on 9 November with a surprise win by the Masakhane Old Boys in a gripping final against three-time winners Middelburg Old Boys.

Blood, sweat and smiles were shared by many who competed in the 23rd annual Discovery 947 Ride Joburg event on a hot summer’s day. Marc Pritzen finished in first place, split seconds before Alexander Worsdale in second and David Maree in third. Craighall’s Parys Edwards placed third in the women’s event behind Jo van de Winkel in second and Caroline Oberholzer in first.
