Betway’s continued commitment to supporting the development of different sporting initiatives saw the sports betting brand visiting the Alexandra community to bolster the development of baseball in the township.
The Betway team was inspired by a young man’s story to make a difference where it was truly needed. American born Sasha Minsky partnered with Africa on Deck, an American based non-profit organisation with an aim to uplift local communities through providing much-needed sporting equipment.
Minsky created a six-month project of collecting pre-loved baseball equipment which included gloves, helmets, uniform, bats and balls which were all handed to the Alexandra Baseball Club at their year-end function on 4 December.
The gesture inspired the brand to get involved and saw the Betway team donating R20 000 towards the senior division side of the club. Betway SA marketing manager, David Rachidi, wished the club the best of luck in their upcoming tournament and urged them to continue playing the growing sport.
“While Baseball is considered a growing sport in South Africa, for the community of Alexandra, it plays a crucial role in keeping the community engaged and active, especially taking the youngsters off the streets and away from mischief that could easily land them in conflict with the law.
“We trust that this donation will go a long way in assisting the club with the wonderful work that they are doing for the community,” said Rachidi.
With the junior side receiving the equipment, the cash donation from Betway SA comes at a crucial time for the senior division as they prepare to compete in the upcoming March 2020 National Baseball Championships in Cape Town.
“The donation is a welcome injection that helps with the club’s biggest expense namely transport of the players to the games. It is with support like this that the club has grown to over 100 participants and has produced three players who have had the honour to represent South Africa.
“We are very thankful for the donation from Betway and the smiles on the players’ faces says it all,” said Louis van Zyl of the Alexandra Baseball Club and Johannesburg Baseball Federation.
