Sweat for a good cause at the Sasfin Cyclethon

MELROSE – Locals are encouraged to participate in support of the Smile Foundation and Hospice Wits.

Community members are encouraged to cycle for a cause at Melrose Arch on 6 October.

The Sasfin Cyclethon aims to raise funds for the Smile Foundation and Hospice Wits.

Cyclists of all ages are invited to hop on their bikes at the Melrose Arch Piazza for a 50-minute slot and spin.

The event has grown into something of an extended training session for cyclists participating in the plethora of cycling events taking place towards the end of the year. The Smile Foundation challenges all cyclists to try stay in the hot seat and spin for the full six hours.

CEO of the Smile Foundation Hedley Lewis said, “This is the fifth consecutive year that we are hosting the cyclethon at Melrose Arch in collaboration with Sasfin, an event that is synonymous with having fun and sweating for a good cause. We wholeheartedly thank Sasfin for generously sponsoring the cyclethon which has created many more smiles. We urge the public to participate and help give children their forever smile.”

Funds raised through the day will go towards palliative care and emotional support for terminally ill patients at Hospice Wits as well as covering costs of weekly facial reconstructive surgeries for children in need at the Smile Foundation. This includes a backlog of cleft lip and palate surgeries at state hospitals and several burn cases as winter draws to an end.

The spinning timeslots are 8am, 9am, 10am, 11am, 12pm and 1pm. The sessions are 50 minutes long with a 10-minute change over. The cost is R160 per bike per session.
