Special Olympics to host third annual Polar Plunge challenge

SANDTON – Celebrities will take the plunge into ice-cold water to raise awareness about Special Olympics South Africa's work.

One hundred celebrities have signed up to support Special Olympics South Africa, based in Bryanston.

Special Olympics South Africa will host the third edition of the Polar Plunge on the 31 August to help raise awareness about the organisation and the work they do in using sport to empower more than 55 000 athletes living with an intellectual disability in South Africa.

Following the success of the previous Polar Plunge events, Special Olympics South Africa is challenging celebrities, media, corporate leaders, government officials and the organisation’s own ambassadors to brave freezing waters and plunge for a purpose.

The event also acts as a fundraiser to help support Special Olympics activities nationally. Companies have the opportunity to participate through the Toss your Boss initiative where employees can fundraise and nominate their boss to take the plunge on behalf of the company. A number of companies have already committed to taking part in the event.

Some of the plungers will also be fundraising to support their own dives by asking their supporters to sponsor them. This year’s list of celebrities, Special Olympics South Africa ambassadors and other well-known individuals taking the plunge include Dr Matthews Phosa, Special Olympics South Africa chairman, and hip-hop personality Nomuzi Mabena.

Other celebrities who will be involved include former Bafana Bafana player Mark Fish, hip-hop artist Gigi La Mayne and comedian John Vlismas.

In addition, a long list of business leaders, politicians and individuals have also committed to take the plunge in support of the athletes of Special Olympics South Africa.
