Alex girl to represent Gauteng province at football festival in Hammerskraal

JOBURG – Alex girl will be part of the Discovery Girls Football Festival.

Bluebirds Ladies development player Teffo Tlotlo has received a timely boost for her fledgling football career when she was chosen to represent Gauteng in the Discovery Girls Football Festival in Hammerskraal later in September.

The MC Weiler Primary School girl will be part of a team of 15 girls who were selected at the annual Discovery Girls Football Festival which was held recently at Crawford Preparatory School in Benmore.

The Crawford festival, which was organised in conjunction with the Johannesburg Primary School Football Association, consisted of eight area teams as well as an invitational team from Alexandra.

As organisers for a host of various football tournaments for Johannesburg primary schools, the association created this festival to develop the sport for young girls and offer them more opportunities to play beyond the current footballing season of schools.

Teffo was scouted by well-known Alex women’s footballer, former Banyana Banyana skipper and now coach of the U17 SA Women’s National team, Simphiwe Dludlu, popularly known during her heydays as Shorty. She was on hand for the day-long festival to scout for the 15 most promising girl footballers.

“I had my work cut out for me already to choose only 15 girls,” said Dludlu. “There was a lot of passion and determination out there, and all the players gave their best and I witnessed amazing homegrown skills. My task was simply to help make some of these girls’ dreams come true.”
