Greek Queens sting the Birds in Alex Northrand derby of the Sasol Women’s Leag

ALEXANDRA – Greek Queens sting Alexandra's Beautiful Birds by four goals to no reply.

Croesus Ladies goalkeeper turned beekeeper as her team stung Bluebirds Ladies in the Alex Northrand derby of the Sasol Women’s League.

The Greek Queens, as Balfour Park-based Croesus are well-known to their avid fans, beat Beautiful Birds of Alex 4–0 in the match played at the Number 3 Square Grounds.

In less than 20 minutes of play, the Greek Queens’ shot-stopper Ntshetsana Mputle signaled for the referee Florence Moshupya’s attention to a mystery pain just below her thigh and on inspection, a bee was discovered entangled in her sock.

She was treated and play resumed. In the 26th minute, her teammate Zandile Mkasa failed to connect with the ball which could have opened the scoring for the Greek Queens and then Simphiwe Masina directed her header straight into the hands of Birds keeper Mpho Teffo.

But soon after, Lerato ‘Livewire’ Ruele atoned for the mistakes of her teammates when she struck the back of the net in the 30th minute to mark the opening goal for her team which lies fourth on the log.

Ruele was at it again but this time missed a glorious opportunity to put her team 2–0 ahead after her shot went wide of the posts.

The action then swung to the Birds’ end when Faith Nthite came close to finding an equaliser but her 38th minute shot sliced across the goalmouth with no teammate in a position to guide it in.

Former Birds star and now a Greek Queen Nthabiseng Ramasokotla was denied the opportunity to write her name on the scoresheet when her strike was well handled by the alert Teffo.

Immediately after Ramasokotla’s attempt at goal, Ruele received a champagne pass from a teammate and made no mistake for her brace.

Goals started raining in for the Greek Queens as stocky substitute Nokukhanya Zide scored and cheekily hugged Teffo saying, “I told you I was going to score against you.”

The final nail in the Birds’ coffin was hammered in by Mkasa.

Birds coach Bulelani Maphanjwa whose team is in the top eight of the log, said they hoped to maintain their position in the remaining 15 games of the season.

“It’s a young team, we’re building and I am confident with the passage of time they will get the necessary experience to deal with what I would call silly mistakes. Once that experience kicks in, they will become a force to reckon with,” he said.
