Grandiose knocked out of the tournament

ALEXANDRA – Diepsloot's D-10 FC sing their way into the last 16 of the Map Games seniors division.

Alex outfit Grandiose have nobody but themselves to blame after failing to qualify for the last 16 of the seniors division of the Map Games 2019.

They were booted out of the tournament 4–2 on penalties in the last 32 round by the enduring Diepsloot side D-10 FC which absorbed all the pressure from the home side in a match played at the Rotary Grounds on 30 June.

The two remained deadlocked at 0–0 after the 90 and the teams went into penalties, with Diepsloot side scoring all their four penalty kicks while Grandiose only managed to score two, with one saved by the keeper and the fourth was inches away from the upright.

If matches were decided on possession and fancy play, Grandiose would have won the game hands down. They threw everything at the visitors but could not find the elusive goals as they either failed to unlock the tight D-10 defence or they just did not have the killer instinct.

Grandiose forwards fluffed uncountable chances in front of goals and would also feel hard done by the referee who did not award them a penalty when one of their forwards tumbled to ground in a clear-cut foul.

The referee ignored appeals by Grandiose players and their bench and waved play on in a game whose first half entirely belonged to the home side while the second stanza was 50–50 as the Diepsloot side grew in confidence.

The Diepsloot team left the Rotary Grounds with their tails up and singing their way to the last 16 while those of Grandiose were neatly tucked between their legs as they knew they would have to wait for another year to try their luck for the lucrative R190 000 prize money for the ultimate winners.

Alex is often regarded as the Mother of all townships as it was the first to be established and all others followed. Diepsloot is considered to be the daughter of Alex after residents who used to occupy the Jukskei River banks were moved there. This time around in the Map Games, the daughter has inflicted a gaping wound on the mother.
