Help requested for young karate student fulfil her dream in Croatia

JOHANNESBURG – This is an important opportunity for Nuru to grow as a karateka.

Nuru Minyuku-Gutto (11) has qualified to represent South Africa in the World Karate Federation K1 Youth Cup in Croatia in July but needs financial support to fulfil her dream.

This is an amazing opportunity for the Lombardy East girl as the trip will include a training camp with the best karate practitioners in the world.

This promising athlete has achieved bronze medals in the Commonwealth Karate Championships last year, the Arnold Classic International Invitational Karate Championships in May this year and most recently in the AUSC Region 5 Karate Championships in Namibia.

Nuru attained Gauteng provincial colours last year and national Proteas colours this year.

Her mother Rikky Minyuku said karate was an expensive sport and at elite level required daily training, national travel for competition leagues and international travel.

Minyuku added that this was an important opportunity for her daughter to grow as a karateka (a practitioner of karate) and begin to prepare for international rankings which start from the age of 14.

“Development opportunities are limited, so parents have to pay for each opportunity that a karateka earns,” said Minyuku.

“Nuru would also like to raise awareness about the importance of supporting young talented athletes who do not have the resources to take advantage of such opportunities. We are requesting sponsorship or donations to get Nuru to Croatia.”

A Back-a-Buddy page has been set-up to facilitate fundraising and it is also possible to facilitate payment to Karate South Africa or directly to Nuru’s family.

“We need to raise R87 500 by mid-June 2019,” said Minyuku.
