Alex Real Madrid U13 team on road to recovery, says coach Maseko

ALEXANDRA – The Spaniards, as Alex Real Madrid is fondly known, seem to have bounced back to the glory times after reaching the final of the U13 Map Games 2019.

Alex Real Madrid U13 team could well be on the road to recovery after years of a slump following their passage to the final of the Maimane Alfred Phiri (Map) Games 2019.

The Spaniards, as they are well-known in Alex football circles, earned their passage at the expense of Western Boys who they beat 2–1 through the boots of Relebogile Mmaboko of Glenhazel Primary School and Anotenda Muronga of Leap Maths and Science School in Linbro Park.

In both instances, the Boys were let down by poor goalkeeping from Nqobile Nkomo of Gordon Primary School. Both goals, one from a free kick, all came as a result of the keeper spilling the ball into the back of his net.

He partially redeemed himself when he made a brilliant save which could have easily been goal number three for the Spaniards.

The Boys’ consolation goal was netted by Maliviwe Dinga, who attends Ithute Primary School, in a brilliantly taken free kick from the edge of the box in similar fashion to that of Relebogile.

Spaniards coach Mocks Maseko commended the good play and determination displayed by his boys and sounded a warning that his U13 division team was on the road to recovery. “This win should save as a warning to everybody that the king is back,” he said in reference to his side that had been in a slump after dominating Alex football for many years.

Meanwhile, defending champions of the U15 division Alex Royal Tigers were booted out in the semi-finals of the Map Games 7–6 by Alex Gunners in sudden death penalties. This after the teams were deadlocked 0–0 when the referee blew his final whistle.

Gunners coach Lesiba Ditshego said he was happy his boys had done the job. “We were prepared for them and I told my boys during the break that if we have gone so far without conceding, it means we have won the match and we must continue to do what we have done in the first half,” he added.

“We worked so hard in keeping the dangerous Tigers on the leash for the entire time of play and in the penalties until sudden death, and we greatly deserve the win.”

Gunners will now meet United Stars in the final who disposed of Blue Aces 3–0.
