Karate instructor happy to host successful tournament

NORWOOD – There were six different events in the regional karate tournament held in Norwood.


This year’s Mother’s Day was extra special as Andre’s Taekwondo Academy hosted their third annual regional tournament in Norwood on 12 May.

Chief instructor and owner of the academy, Sabumnim Andre van Tonder, said they hosted participants from various parts of the country and friends and families came together to celebrate and support their children who took part.

Van Tonder said with competitors from Bloemfontein, Middleburg, Secunda, Pretoria, Limpopo and Germiston their studio in the heart of Norwood was filled to capacity. He explained that 21 gold, 21 silver and 11 bronze medals were awarded on the day ‘and all with only 22 competitors’.

“There were six events to compete in which for traditional form, traditional weapon form, sparring, combat weapon sparring, extreme forms and extreme weapon forms. We also had four students that competed at Arnold Classics this year and walked away with five gold and four silver medals.”

He said that he is very proud of his students and further congratulated all who participated in this wonderful event. “We look forward to seeing what next year’s event has in store.”
