Grade 7 learner paints all the benches at Zoo Lake

PARKVIEW – Learner Rolo Turvey appeals to park users to contribute to the project by lending a hand or contributing financially.

Grade 7 learner at The Ridge School, Rolo Turvey is giving back to the community by giving a fresh coat of paint to all the wooden benches at Zoo Lake.

The Saxonwold resident said, “I was bored of picking up litter around the streets and wanted to do something more meaningful so I contacted the Zoo Lake Committee to offer my services.”

Rolo explained that Fran Haslam, who chairs the Zoo Lake Users Group, suggested that he paint the benches.

“I chose Zoo Lake because it’s right on my doorstep. The work has got to be done and community members need to help out in public open spaces,” said Rolo.

He aims to visit the park every Saturday and complete all the benches by the end of winter.

The first bench he painted has been rejuvenated with a bright orange colour.

“We decided to go with bright colours as a symbol of the rainbow nation. Other benches will be green, red and pink.”

Rolo is appealing to users of Zoo Lake to contribute to his project either financially or by lending a hand on a Saturday.

“It felt good to give back. Now, every time I drive past, I notice the bright orange bench and feel proud.”

Rolo’s mother Tessa Turvey said, “This community work has created a sense of ownership in Rolo, which makes him care and want to look after the park more. I appeal to people’s sense of responsibility for public spaces. We need to take responsibility.”

Haslam was impressed with Rolo’s willingness to assist. “What a great initiative. We are so grateful. It’s uplifting to see how these young leaders are embracing these projects and helping make a difference. I hope this will inspire other learners to do the same,” said Haslam.
