Young Furman walks in his father’s top power lifters footsteps

SANDTON – Justin will be representing South Africa along with a number of different powerlifters.

Powerlifter Justin Furman (17) will follow in the footsteps of his legendary father Ian, when he represents South Africa in the World Powerlifting Championships in Sweden in June.

Justin, from Gallo Manor, has his eye on the top prize in his age and weight group.

He was selected to compete by the South African Powerlifting Federation after competing in the South African Powerlifting Championships in Potchefstroom in March. Justin needed a combined total of 497.5kg to qualify and he achieved 517.5kg to secure his selection.

His father who coaches Justin, holds the South African and Commonwealth bench press records in the Master 2 category.

“I am ecstatic to be able to represent SA at such a young age and to follow in my father’s footsteps,” said the youngster.

“I also know that I will have to put in a lot of hard work in the gym and also put extra effort into my studies as I start exams the day I return from Sweden.”

Justin is currently in his third year of competitive powerlifting and trains at the Barbell Bullies Gym in Sunninghill.

He has represented Gauteng in a number of local competitions and his trip to Sweden will be his first time representing South Africa at international level.

“I feel very proud and privileged to be able to represent my country. I feel anxious but excited to compete against the world’s best and also grateful to experience this incredible once in a lifetime opportunity.”
